Miku Restaurant
1055 W Hastings Street
Vancouver, BC

Sometime last year, I received an email from a person (to left unnamed) identifying herself as a person related to Miku Restaurant. According to the email, part of the reason I was sent the email was because I have blogged about a lot of restaurants in the Downtown area and there was an interest for me to write about them. As you know, I seldom accept such invitations and, when I actually go to the restaurant, I don’t identify myself. Of course, carrying a big camera does not help and you can easily be spotted. However, because of the Olympics, half the town might be tourist and, as a result, I was able to sneak past a lot of these checks. Seeing this opportunity, I checked with my friend PR if she would be interested in lunch. And to Miku we went…

Kushi Box
520 Robson Street
Vancouver, BC

Similar to my post yesterday on Ganache Patisserie, for today’s post, I visited a place I mentioned in my Vancouver 2010 – Where to Eat post: Kushi Box. The difference, however, is that I haven’t been there before, instead I provided a link to fellow blogger Gigi (of Ho Yummy) who visited it. Located in the 500 block of Robson Street, that block is becoming sort of a street full of ethnic eats. How so? In the same block, they are Gyu Don Ya (Japanese rice bowls, to be open as of Feb 23rd, 2010), Falafel Maison (Middle Eastern), Kushi Box (Japanese), Viet Sub (Vietnamese), Beard Pappa’s, Next Noodle Bar (mixed?), Junsei River (Japanese) and H-Mart, where Matoi Sushi (Japanese) and Wang Ga Ma (Korean). The interesting part was that Jenny (of My Secret Eden) also wrote about Kushi Box not long after and, in a way, her thoughts were quite different. I guess, I had to find out myself!

For some reason, I am starting to feel like the Energizer bunny; you know, it keeps going and going and going… And that is despite the burnout I am going through! For today, Ontario House, which means I have only one (and a half) exhibit/pavilion left to visit – Atlantic Canada House. Depending on circumstances, I might or might not blog about that one as I queued for it during the weekend and it was downright ridiculous… But, back to Ontario House. Let’s just say they are lucky I persevered. That is because it took me two attempts to get in there! (Sorry, I do not have Elaine’s luck… >_< ). But, not that I did….

Ganache Patisserie
1262 Homer Street
Vancouver, BC

When I was writing my “Where to Eat?” posts for Vancouver 2010, one of my suggestions was Ganache Patisserie for pastries. While I trusted Elaine’s opinion, I must also now add I have been there myself a couple of times. So, how come I didn’t write about it? Well, it just happens it is one of those felt through the cracks posts… -_-;;; So, after I wrote that post and on a day walking by the area, I decided to stop by.

Aside to my visit to Robson Street and LiveCity/Downtown for the Canada Pavilion, most of my houses/pavilions so far have a food component. Today’s post is that of the Northern House, a house dedicated to the northernmost Canadian territories, i.e., Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut, is mostly a cultural one. That does not mean it will less interesting than the others; I certainly enjoyed it because it was a break from the hecticness of other pavilions and houses. So, please, enjoy!

Betty’s Fish & Chips
4850 Imperial Street
Burnaby, BC

There are times when, for good or for bad, a restaurant close, it is cherished for what it was or simply forgotten. However, when a restaurant re-opens, one might wonder if it is in name only or it is really a spiritual reincarnation of its former self. Now, I am not talking about re-branding themselves (read: Fuel into Re-Fuel) or changing its theme (Gastropod into Maenam). We are talking about the same restaurant, same food. Something like Wally’s Burger which met its demise when its lease wasn’t renewed in its former Kingsway location but reopened last summer in Cates Park in North Vancouver. However, that new place was, in my opinion, a shadow of its former self… And then there is Betty’s Fish and Chips, an out of the way fish and chips place in Burnaby, not far from Metropolis at Metrotown, which claims to be the best fish and chips in town. If that is true, how come it closed to re-open?

Sorry, I messed up and did not take a picture of the outside… >_<

I will admit something: The reason I did not write any posts on Saturday and Sunday was to “enjoy” the Olympic activites (after escaping first for some lunch in Langley). While I did go to Vancouver Downtown, it took me less than an hour to suffer from an Olympic Games burnout. I mean, it is enjoyable to see so many people in the Downtown area but, in my case, I can only take that much. As a result, I decided to skip my weekend post. Whether I keep on visiting the other exhibits and pavilions… Well, to a certain extent, that remains to be seen. In the meantime, enjoy!
Now, so far all the places I have been are mostly Canadian. So, for a break, I convinced some work colleagues to go to a place near our workplace, specifically, Saxony House, located in the entrace of Stanley Park. It was a short walk from our office (though, my definition of “short walk” is somewhat skewed) on a sunny winter day… (Note, this post has one reference that might not be suitable to certain ages or may offend some. You have been warned!)
Oh, once again, all my other posts this topic before continuing!:
