Vienna Treasures
909 – 12th Street
New Westminster, BC

When given the option, I would rather call shotgun rather than drive myself. However, when push comes to shove, I have no problems being behind the wheel. On a hot day, I took a leisure drive in the suburbs scouting for places that might look interesting to blog (yes, I try to find holes-in-the-wall, out of the way places). One of those places is the topic of today’s post: Vienna Treasures.

The truth is… I couldn’t take a better picture of the store front. There was that post and the traffic…

Panaderia Latina Bakery
4906 Joyce Street
Vancouver, BC

Just as the subject might suggest… Here I go again, Latin American food! Panaderia Latina Bakery (which, if you know Spanish, will fall into the category of Redundancy Department of Redundancy) came to my attention after an article The Georgia Straight (check the full article here). Non-Mexican food? That was all I needed to know…

Italia Bakery
104 – 2828 East Hastings Street
Vancouver, BC

I have mentioned previously that I have some sort of Friday night activity in the Hastings area, near Pacific Coliseum. However, by the time I am done, most of the restaurants in the area are already closed and, as a result, I seldom have the chance to eat some of the offerings there. Except when that activity has additional sessions on weekends. This was one of those instances… I was tempted to go to Bao Chau but, that day, I was not into Vietnamese. Slocan Restaurant was also an option but did not want diner type food. Then I remembered a recently opened sushi spot (as earlier this year, if memory serves me right). That place is Blowfish Sushi.

Blowfish Sushi to the far left; to the right, Italia Bakery which I visited on the same trip!

Maxim’s Bakery
Several locations across Metro Vancouver
Unit 161 – 4800 Kingsway (Metrotown – Location visited)

Pork buns, cha siu bao, call it whatever you want, when you hear it, you know it is a staple of Chinese bakeries. With such a large Chinese population in Metro Vancouver, you would expect a good deal of these bakeries – and the largest one of all being Maxim’s Bakery.

Sorry for the low quality of this picture; it was taken with my cell-phone

I think there are obvious reasons why you can find good eats in the intersection of major streets. Whether is it is a strip mall or a market, just drive by and it will be there. One sort-of a major road in Vancouver that strikes me odd is Fraser Street. While there are a lot of residences in the area and a major school, culinary-wise looks like a wasteland. No, it is not that there aren’t eateries or marketplaces, rather the quality of them. I once went to buy some buns in a restaurant near John Oliver Secondary (Fraser Street and 41st Avenue) and had to throw them away after a bite.
While driving in the area a couple of days ago, I noticed a bakery that looks relatively busy so I couldn’t help myself stop by and get something…
