I have bashed at times the all-you-can-eat concept a little bit too much at times. You have to admit it: How much “quality” you can provide when you charge a fix price and there is almost no limit as to how much a diner can eat? OK, sure, hotel buffets charge an arm and a leg and the food can be quite good. But, then, they have mastered it to a certain extent. For the rest, it is a matter of balance things out: calculate based on the average case scenario (though leaning towards the worst case scenario) and hoping most of the customers won’t consume as much.

With that in mind, PO and I went one day to Great Wall Mongolian BBQ (name of the restaurant) for Mongolian BBQ (type of cuisine). The twist in this case is that you fill up a bowl with different meats, vegetables and noodles. Add some sauce and it is then cooked for you on a large griddle. What’s so funny about this? Because Mongolian BBQ (the cuisine), despite the pamphlet they provide explaining their cuisine, is neither Mongolian nor it is “BBQ”! Anyway, we were up for it…

Montana’s Cookhouse

After that hike in Diez Vistas, DVP couldn’t join me for dinner as she had to attend something unexpected. Alas, me “stranded” in the middle of nowhere and starting to get hungry (despite eating several handfuls of cashews before the last portion of the trail). So, while driving out of Buntzen Lake, I chose to drive through Coquitlam Centre rather than the “easier” route of Port Moody. Why? I have absolutely no idea… Could it be because I came driving that way? When I hit that mall, I remembered there was a Montana’s Cookhouse, as well as Chada Thai, I chose the former for one reason: Meat! I mean, I was darn hungry and all I could think of was meat… NOW!!!

Delicious BBQ

Delicious BBQ (Crystal Mall) on Urbanspoon

The truth is that this week could have been Kingsway (Burnaby side) week. That’s because, originally, all posts would have been in this area and, two of them of similar cuisine, namely, Vietnamese. To avoid that burning sense, I added Akira Sushi and, to further shuffle sense, tomorrow’s post will be Nimby Burger. However, I still needed a post for today. While I have some materials in the queue, I still had to go through the post-processing process, etc. etc. So, in the end, I decided to use of of those originally scheduled posts… ^_^;;;

On Tuesday’s post, I mentioned I visited Crystal Mall and, again, in a pseudo back-to-back type visit, I went to another stand. This time, rather than noodles or burgers, I went for some straight Chinese goodness: siu mei or roasted/BBQ meats. In this case, Delicious BBQ. Considering they have some interesting competition in the form of Top King (in the market level) and another stand in the other side of the food court (which name escapes me right now), I thought it would be an interesting experience. Furthermore, there is still places in (gasp!) Richmond like HK BBQ Master! But, I was in Burnaby so Delicious BBQ it was!

On a Friday during the Olympics, Sherman gives me a call and asks “Do you want to go to Ozark’s tomorrow?”. Now, due to the background noise, I thought he said “Do you want to go to the (Richmond) O Zone tomorrow?”. Of course, my reaction was “WTH? You want me to go to line up in Richmond out of all places???”. When he repeated himself that is when I understood he wanted to go for food! And, in my case, I needed an escape from the Olympic madness. So, the following day, to Ozark’s BBQ in Langley it was!

Dae Bak Bon Ga (Robson)

Just a caveat: due to other timing, this post was shuffled around and almost ended up being lost in the pile. That of course brings the question: when did I actually go to Dae Bak Bon Ga? How about almost three weeks ago? And that was in part thanks to the Foodosophy team and Sherman (of Sherman’s Food Adventures) who went there recently – though to their Kitsilano location. Since I have been meaning to try different cuisines, I thought, hey, why not! So, I convinced PO to tag along and there we went.

I know, I know… Those who have read this blog for some time knows about my issues Richmond, specially that of bad drivers and bad parking. However, there are times were we have to just deal with it. In my case, it has to do with Mijune who enthusiastically wrote about Maple Castella, a bakery in Richmond. Being such a dedicated food blogger, I decide to, oh, well, just deal with it. However, as if destiny was not in my side, when I arrived, they mentioned they pumpkin bread so lauded by Mijune wasn’t ready yet and, if I wanted one, I had to come back by around 2:00 p.m. With almost 2 hours to “burn”, the question was… What now? How about lunch? While I could have gone to places nearby, reality is, I wanted something different. OK, in Richmond where about half of the restaurants are Asian, sometimes it is not a matter of different. Instead, it is a matter of finding what puts you above the rest. In the case of HK BBQ Master, I have heard it offers the best Chinese BBQ meats. That was good enough reason…

eh! Restaurant

Eh! Restaurant on Urbanspoon

Had you walked the two blocks in Alberni Street between Burrard and Bute last year and compare it to this year, you won’t believe the shift it has occured. Where it used to host a series of stores, it has now shifted to restaurants. Coast, Italian Kitchen, Saltlik (which was closed and now re-opened as Townhall) and Market by Jean-Georges . However, at the same time, some places closed, like the food fair in the corner of Alberni and Thurlow and Kaplan’s Star Deli have closed. However, there was one place – eh! Restaurant – that I have walked by a couple dozen times already and did not pay to much attention but suddenly became really curious for other reasons – name aside, that is, eh.
