Nimby Burger
2210 Cornwall Avenue
Vancouver, BC

What? Another burger place post? Well, true, I wrote about Five Guys Burgers and Fries last week but, considering that the rest of the posts for this week would have ended up being that of Asian restaurants, I thought, nah, this might be “worth it”…
Now, Nimby Burger (as in… Not In My Back Yard?) has made some noise in the last couple of weeks, including what I believe is the best method of testing if the restaurant (as set up) works: serve their food free. I mean, why should I pay a restaurant if they are still tweaking things? Aside from that is the fact it imitates principles similar to that of a well known burger shop in the US, In-n-Out Burger. While I haven’t been to In-n-Out, at least I know how I like my burger. With that in mind, I went there the weekend after they opened.

Ten Bistro
Calle 50
Centro Comercial Multiplaza (location visited)

There always seems to be a cultural flip when people travel from/to different countries. When I first moved to Vancouver, I was really happy to try things we didn’t have in Panama (or, at least things I considered “exotic” back then). For example, I visited one or two Korean restaurants, then moved to Indian, Vietnamese restaurants, Japanese restaurants and so on. Why? Because in Panama, these weren’t mainstream back then! Of course, things have changed and yesterday’s post of Sushi Itto is a sign of that. Of course, since I was out of the country for so long, that meant I really wanted to try the “local” fare, not things I could also find in Vancouver, as well. Alas, my mom was cooking almost every single day for me and my parent’s friends which limited my opportunities of eating out. But, I had a wild card: meeting my own friends. As mentioned yesterday, I went out with GN and the meeting place was a mall where we had a light snack in Sushi Itto. Later that day then, it was time for dinner and the question was… Where? In the end, we went to Ten Bistro; however, believe me, there was a bit of thought process behind it!

Lam Hoa Quan
5073 Victoria Drive
Vancouver, BC

On a weekend, I had a long list of things to do and, after having done with most of them, I was up for an early lunch. The problem is that a lot of places do not really open “early enough” and trying to find something might waste a lot of times. One of my to-do list things was in Victoria Drive, I decided to stay in there and just have lunch. That meant going to Lam Hoa Quan, mainly due to a post by Anita.

Thai Hang Vietnamese Restaurant

A couple of weeks ago, Karl (The Friday Lunch) and Sherman (Sherman’s Food Adventures) checked with me for Bao Bei. But, alas, I felt sick that night. Karl and Sherman decided to go ahead anyway but, instead, they ended up going to Hapa Izakaya because Bao Bei was packed full (not unexpected considering it was just open by then). Fortunately, another outing was organized, this time for something Vietnamese, but not pho or banh mi but Bò 7 món or beef 7 ways or seven courses of beef. The restaurant selected for this? Thai Hang in Hastings Street. And, in attendance…
And, of course… Me!

Safari Gourmet Pies

Feel free to call it bad influence from shokutsu (of Foodosophy) and Sherman (of Sherman’s Food Adventures). When they back to back went to the same place and say their offerings are good, I somehow feel compelled to go. And this places is not even restaurant! What place is this? Safari Gourmet Pies. (Sorry, Anita, Mijune, these are not sweet pies!).

Axum Ethiopian Restaurant

I believe that one of the best “perks” (for the lack of a better word) of food blogging is that you get to meet people who shares a similar passion for food. That is how I ended up receiving an email from Elaine and Chris (of Parker Pages. One thing led to the other and, in a way, that’s how we met the night Mijune (of Follow Me Foodie) organized here twEAT-up. But, we also planned an outing together, that one being a visit to an Ethiopian restaurant: Axum, located in the farther side of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. And, in this visit, Sherman (of Sherman’s Food Adventures) was also along.
On that note, check Elaine’s post here as well as Sherman’s post here!

Once again, I was in South Burnaby running some errands and due to other circumstances, it ended up a bit later than expected. Thanks to post from Jenny (of My Secret Eden), Kevin (of 604 Foodtography) and Sherman (of Sherman’s Food Adventures), once again, I decided to tackle Chinese/Taiwanese-type late night eats and that place ended up being Pearl House Restaurant.
