Hello from Scottsdale, Arizona! As mention in my post last Friday, I was on a business trip and this is the place I went to. Weather-wise, it was an interesting change: since we are just starting to “feel” autumn and I went to a place that feels stuck in an eternal dry summer. Also, since we will be switching back to standard time, this trip gave me an early heads up for that switch (similar to Saskatchewan here in Canada, Arizona does not observe daylight savings). But, all this aside…

We all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. During the first couple of breakfast I had, it was a total disappointment. Now, there is a reason behind it (more in a moment) and, eventually, found “better” options. Today is about one of those options: The Breakfast Club (hereby referred to as “TBC”).

In my Bon’s Off Broadway post, I mentioned what I usually have for breakfast. I am sure writing about cereals is not too exciting so, on an odd day last week, I took it off and, well, as you can guess, go to a breakfast place. Oh, wait, take that back: I had my regular breakfast that day, instead, I chose go to Cafe Medina for an early lunch but ordering from their breakfast menu. And, as some of you might now, Cafe Medina is an offspring of Chambar, a well known restaurant in Vancouver, so it ought to be good, right?

As mentioned in yesterday’s post, one of the disadvantages of flying from Vancouver, specially if you are flying to the east of the US or Canada is that your flight will most likely arrive late night (local time). There is sort of an opposite issue as well, though: there might no be late flights in the case you want to fly back that evening and some flights leave relatively early (as early as 7:00 a.m.). Of course, that means you will end up at an early time in Vancouver (as early as noon). On my way back from Miramar, I chose to fly “late” as I was able to find a flight via Pearson in Toronto leaving around noon (local time). Why? Hey, breakfast time! And, for breakfast, for no particular reason, I chose to go to The Original Pancake House (hereby referred to as OPHS).

Yes, it was cloudy when I was there but, similar to Atlantic Canada, you can just wait five minutes and, chances are, the weather will change…

Miami/Miramar 2009 – Random Eateries

by KimHo on September 20, 2009 under: Food,Random,Restaurant,Travel

A lot of things happened on my trip to Miami/Miramar. As mentioned in a previous post, for the most part, it was good despite some wacky things happened/mentioned. For today’s post, a somewhat random mix of other places I went to eat which I could have put into individual posts. So, why not? It is just that I wasn’t sure if there was enough material (not to mention the quality of that material) so, as a result, I thought it would be better to have a single large post. Hope it works!

Bon’s Off Broadway

It is said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. How much? Some even say breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, sup like a pauper. In my case, I usually end up having a bowl of cereal with some fruit (either banana or some berries) and soy milk. Once in a while, some bread or a bagel with jam and a glass of soy milk. Not necessarily a king’s breakfast; however, it gets me there for lunch which, for me, is usually noon sharp… Last weekend, I had a very important appointment for 10:00 a.m. and, while I could have breakfast at home, I chose to have breakfast outside (I was driving anyway). However, I did not want to go to Denny’s or IHOP. I wanted something a bit out of the way, something like Bon’s Off Broadway.

Despite it was a short trip, after I came back from Richmond, VA, I still suffered the effects of jet lag. That meant waking up early and be hungry by 10:30 a.m. Fortunately, aside from meetings, my work does not force me to have lunch at a specific time of the day so I chose to have a really early “lunch”. The problem? Most places do not open before 11:00 a.m… But, I had a backup plan: A place that is open “20 hours a day”. That place is Hamburger Mary’s.

I will openly admit this: One thing I do not like about flying is the lag due to the time shift. When I went to Panama, oddly, I did not have any problems adjusting to the local time (Panama is -5GMT vs -8GMT but, due to daylight savings, right now the difference is +2 hours). However, on my flight back, I arrived in Vancouver at around 12:00 a.m., which gave me enough to take the cab home, sleep a couple of hours and go to work. That created a problem in the next couple of days (actually, daylight savings has been an almost “constant” problem): I was hungry way before noon. Usually, I just wait until something closer to noon but, alas, it was not an option this time…

Going for “lunch” before noon has issues of its own: a lot of places does not open until 12:00 m, so options are slightly limited. Two of these places is the topic of today’s post, Joe’s Grill and Teresa’s Cafe.
