Breka Bakery
6533 Fraser St
Vancouver, BC V5X

I think there are obvious reasons why you can find good eats in the intersection of major streets. Whether is it is a strip mall or a market, just drive by and it will be there. One sort-of a major road in Vancouver that strikes me odd is Fraser Street. While there are a lot of residences in the area and a major school, culinary-wise looks like a wasteland. No, it is not that there aren’t eateries or marketplaces, rather the quality of them. I once went to buy some buns in a restaurant near John Oliver Secondary (Fraser Street and 41st Avenue) and had to throw them away after a bite.

While driving in the area a couple of days ago, I noticed a bakery that looks relatively busy so I couldn’t help myself stop by and get something…

One thing that caught my attention was the fact it said they were open 24 hours!

They had an interesting variety of pastries and sandwiches:

True, it might not have the variety of, say, Fratelli Bakery or fanciness of Thomas Haas but, given the area, it looks quite good! I ended up ordering…

A piece of tiramisu. I had it to go rather than eat in as the tables were all busy and did not want to wait or something like that.

As for the tiramisu itself, I chose it because I wanted something different, i.e., not your usual cheesecake or pudding. Another reason is that I think tiramisu as a dessert that taste better after sitting in the fridge for a couple of hours.

In my case, after I took a bite, I almost choked. No, it was not bad, rather, it was the layer of cocoa powder on the top. However, there was something I did not really like: somehow, the layer of mascarpone mixture was frozen. As a result, rather than the fluffy-yet-creamy layer felt like… Crunchy (for the lack of a better word/phrase). Once past that, still it was not that great.

Overall, I have mixed feelings. It was neither good or bad so there shouldn’t be any reason for a re-visit. But, at least I am now aware of an option in the case I crave for some sweets at odd hours of the day.
