I interrupt my Tacoma post for Minoas Taverna! :D

For the most part, most food blogger gatherings have been done by Sherman and myself, though, for the last one, it was Jenny who organized it. Out of the blue, Elaine drops some of us an email for an impromptu mini-gathering of sorts. The place? Minoas Greek Taverna, a restaurant in Kingsway where I have seen countless amount of times (mainly because I take Skytrain) which has made me wonder for the longest: how the restaurant manage to survive in such odd location? Is it because they serve something good? One way to find out! In this round, it was Chris and Elaine, Sherman, Jessica and M, and me. Others were also invited but due to external circumstances, they couldn’t make it. Oh, well, I guess it should be still enough people to sample several dishes, hehehehe.

OK, let me reassure you that, despite the name of this post, it is a PG post. Yes, there is a double entendre with the title of this post which is also the name of this restaurant. If you don’t know about that possible other meaning… Well, I won’t explain it (feel free to Google it). So, the question is… Why I was in a restaurant with such a strange, almost risque name? In that case, I will finger point shokutsu of Foodosophy who wrote about this place a couple of weeks ago. And what shokutsu end up getting? Based on that post, I will assume fried chicken!

The day following my visit to the Great Bear Pub, I was once again in the Kingsway area of Burnaby and, as usual (?), I was in the looks for good eats. I was originally thinking on getting something heavy with meat in it but changed my plans at the last moment because I had already something heavy with meat earlier that day, not to mention I was planning to go to the Greek Day the day afterwards. Hey, I am a heavy meat eater but at the same time I have my limits! Now, I wasn’t sure if vegetarian will cut it; besides I couldn’t think of such type of restaurants at that moment. So, I went to what seems to be next best thing: Korean! And, just by coincidence, I was driving close to Great Bear and right next to it, Potter’s Garden.

Great Bear Pub

Almost a month ago, on my way back from Seattle/Tukwila, I was in delivery mode after crossing the border. I ended up delivering goodies to different people and, knowing that Sherman and his hockey team was playing that night, I decided to bring some stuff for them as well. That’s because, well, they were good to me as well since they let me join them for after game dinners (in this case, Pattaya Thai and Tenhachi). The place they were supposed to meet was Black Bear Neighbourhood Pub. Bear… Bear… For some reason, at first, I thought it was in Kingsway, as in THIS Great Bear Pub, instead, that place was in North Van. OK, it was a long drive but, hey, when you see people with happy faces, that’s what matters the most. But, that “bear” thing stuck in my head and one night, I decided to go to Great Bear Pub…

Greek Summer Festival

Last year, around this time, I went to several festival (for eample, the Scandinavian Mid Summer Fest, Latin Summer Fest, Powell Street Festival and so on). One that I couldn’t make it was the Greek Day, as it conflicted with another personal matters (as mentioned in my Scandinavian Mid Summer Fest post above). Despite I went to Greek Summer Festival, in-lieu of the Greek Day, well, it isn’t necessarily the same. So, this year, I made sure I went to that festivity, despite the weather was un-summer like. But, hey, weather hasn’t stopped me before! So, without further ado, a small photo essay of this event.

In the last couple of weeks, I have been visiting places that sell Chinese BBQ pork – for the most part, in the form of a meal served with rice. It is simple, it is satisfying, it is Chinese… For a twist, I decided this time to go for lechón, the Spanish variant of this dish; however, since I am not aware of any Spanish restaurant in Vancouver that does this, I went then for the next best alternative: the Filipino version. After all, there is a Filipino community here and there is that catering to their own community, right? That place was Joyce BBQ/Manila Lechon, located near Joyce Skytrain Station.

Happy Day Metro House

I am not afraid to say this: There are a lot of ethnic restaurants that, unless you are from that specific culture, they are not that inviting of “other” people. Take for Chinese, where service can suck royally (but something we are used to) but it is not that welcoming to non-Chinese (or even Chinese who can’t read/write). How so? Because part of the menu is not in the local lingua franca! At other instances, the exterior looks so un-inviting that, unless you know the cuisine very well, chances are you won’t visit it. To me, that is the case of Happy Day Metro House in Burnaby. If I look from outside, it looks like another corner restaurant. However, with tall booths, dark windows and not too bright exterior, I always wonder if there is some sort of gang activity going on! But, my sense of adventure for food beat that fear, which lead me one day to visit it…
