Twisted Fork Bistro
1147 Granville Street
Vancouver, BC

On Monday, I made reference to karma, the fact that what goes around, comes around. That one time, it was me paying my dues; this time, it was the other way around. As thanks, my dear friend PR (whom I took for dinner at Mistral French Bistro), asked if I could to join her for dinner. Well, does that really require too much convincing?
Anyway, there was one small problem: I was out of town so I didn’t have much of a chance to check where, not to mention make reservations. So, I let her with the task of finding a place – preferably somewhere I haven’t been. She thought Twisted Fork Bistro was a good idea so, sure, why not!

Pho Hong
5975 Kingsway
Burnaby, BC

Ah, once again… Late night on Kingsway… It seems that a year or so ago, I was spending late nights in Hastings East after playing Magic the Gathering; now, I spend more time in the Kingsway side of Burnaby which leads to late night eats at times. In this case, I was looking for something “soft” for the stomach, as I had some heavy eats earlier that day. That easily took out a lot of options there and left me with something like pho…. Well, pho it is! And, among the several pho places, this time I chose to go to Pho Hong.

Nancy Wonton House
5257 Victoria Drive
Vancouver, BC

Once again, during the Olympic Games, after I attended the only event I got tickets for, which I got from the original lottery, it was dinner time. The problem was that… I didn’t know where to go for dinner! Driving round and round (OK, not literally), I was going through Victoria Drive when I noticed Nancy Wonton House, a place I have in my list for a while but haven’t for some reason. And one of the reasons people like this place? Its hours: it close at a relatively late (or early, depending on your perspective) time of the day.

Lhy Thai
7357 Edmonds Street
Burnaby, BC

In the last couple of weeks, I think we have had a good share of blog posts of Thai restaurants. I am not talking about myself, I only visited Tangthai with Victoria (and was also visited by other food bloggers) but Victoria also visited Maenam. And prior to that, shokutsu of Foodosophy, visited Lhy Thai. So, in its own funny way, I chose to semi-continue that trend by visiting that same restaurant, Lhy Thai.

Axum Ethiopian Restaurant

I believe that one of the best “perks” (for the lack of a better word) of food blogging is that you get to meet people who shares a similar passion for food. That is how I ended up receiving an email from Elaine and Chris (of Parker Pages. One thing led to the other and, in a way, that’s how we met the night Mijune (of Follow Me Foodie) organized here twEAT-up. But, we also planned an outing together, that one being a visit to an Ethiopian restaurant: Axum, located in the farther side of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. And, in this visit, Sherman (of Sherman’s Food Adventures) was also along.
On that note, check Elaine’s post here as well as Sherman’s post here!

To those who do not know yet, last Friday was the opening ceremony for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games. During the next two weeks, in addition to my regular food/restaurant blog posts, I will try to do photo essays of the city, specially of the Downtown Vancouver/Yaletown area and probably some of the other installations across town. Sorry, no Cypress or Whistler… I mean, you can watch the sport events themselves in TV and news you might not necessarily see the rest that Vancouver has to offer. And that brings the topic of this post…
In the last week or so, I have been receiving emails asking for suggestions on places to eat, things they have to try, restaurant they should visit and so on. And it goes all ways, some for cheap, something they should spare no expense and so on. The commonality of the request is the Downtown/Yaletown area of town. I tried my best answering those emails but, as explained in my response, in my opinion, Yaletown is full of expensive restaurants where the focus is not always in good food. Instead, I suggested expand a little bit more. Based on the couple of emails I have replied, I thought I should compile what I have written and put it in a post.
Update: The topic of price gouging has popped up in the comments section. I thought I should include some links here, as a caveat emptor for out of town customers. I love Vancouver but despise that restaurant owners is taking advantage of the Olympics to obtain additional revenues.
- An article in The Globe and Mail from Alexandra Gill, the newspaper’s food critic.
- A site maintaining a naughty or nice list of restaurants.
- An article (and video) from CTV.

I have mentioned previously that I do not like to celebrate my own birthday but that does not mean I won’t celebrate other people’s birthday. This was the case of PR, a very dear friend I have met some years ago and it was her “special” time of the year. So, as a “gift”, I asked her for dinner with the caveat she has to choose the restaurant. Her selection? Harambe, an Ethiopian restaurant in The Drive.
