Well, another week, another food cart to check in Vancouver! So far, all the food carts I have visited can safely be considered “standard” fare, i.e., they serve dishes that pretty much everybody would eat. Granted, Chinese Skewer King can be called “ethnic” but, hey, pretty much every culture has their version of meat on a stick so that might not necessarily count. Anyway, for this post, I decided to go east of Burrard Street and ended up in Granville and Georgia, in a corner I consider to be *the* prime spot for food carts, given its proximity to the Skytrain station, plus major bus routes and Granville Entertainment District. And the lucky winner of this draw? Kimono Koi Crepes.

All you can eat. That one option that it is difficult to judge because it goes quantity over quality. Yet, still, human nature goes for the former. I myself have avoided going to many of these places for that same reason and, if I do, at times, I end up ordering a la carte – as I did in Saffron Indian Cuisine. A couple of weeks ago, some colleagues suggested Taiko; however, I was a bit skeptical. Oh, well, I had to give it a try just because so it was a matter of when. Fortunately, I was able to “convince” PO (who shares my notion about AYCE places) and to Taiko we went.

Am I creating a trend for this week? Nah, not really. In sort of a follow-up from yesterday’s post, on another day, I decided to drop by Chinese Skewer King‘s (CSK) “neighbour” in terms of food carts: Ragazzi Pizza Truck. Located in the northwest corner of Burrard and Pender (on Burrard), they serve something a lot of Vancouverites look as a $1.50 snack: pizza. Given the predominance of these shops in Downtown Vancouver (for example, just drop by Pender and Seymour), you’ve got to ask yourself one question: ‘Do I feel lucky?’… Oh, wait, wrong topic. But back to question: how would a pizza cart compared to those already established already?

After been back in town, it was time to tackle the remaining food carts in Vancouver. After all, given my experience in Re-Up BBQ, it was quite possible that my initial thoughts of food carts in Vancouver was mistaken and, actually, there was some glimmer of hope. That brings us to today’s post of another food cart in the Downtown Vancouver area: Chinese Skewer King, which, as the name suggests, has skewers. Can you go wrong with some meat-on-a-stick?

Delightful Cuisine

For good or for bad, in the couple of blocks near the corner of Robson and Denman in the West End, you tend to get more ethnic restaurant than other parts of Downtown Vancouver. For Japanese, you have different ramen places like Santouka, Kintaro and Motomachi, izakaya like Kingyo and Guu. Then you have several Korean restaurants like Kim Bob Chun Gook, Nor Boo Korean Restaurant, Ap Gu Jung and so on. For Thai, you have Khunnai Chang and Tangthai. However, given there is only that much space in the West End, this growth has come to the expense of others restaurants. For example, Rooster’s Quarters in Denman closed some time ago to be replaced by Pomegrante, which failed as well to now be replaced by Dajia, a Japanese restaurant, which over saturates the existing market. Notice I didn’t mention some that, otherwise, would be ubiquitous like Chinese (there is Main Dining Restaurant, Chongqing, Hon’s and Legendary Noodles) and Vietnamese. Ah, Vietnamese, the one that a lot of times is overshadow by the other ones mentioned above. But, then again, their presence in Downtown is a bit muted and it seems they focus more in the Kingsway and Fraser Street area instead. So, to a certain extent, having one nearby seems to be a good thing. When Delightful Cuisine took over the former spot of a French restaurant (which confirms the above), the question was would it fulfill those expectations?

At the company I worked for, there are some “interesting” practices. For new employees, there is one that particularly stand out. Rather than throwing you into the fray, you are assigned a “buddy”. When three new employees joined at the same time, I “volunteered” to be one. Part of the reason was that I had just been assigned a long project which side effects include me to be “grounded” for the rest of the year. So why not! Now, there is a follow-up unwritten policy: you are entitled to two “free” lunches – one of them when you join. You can guess which is the other one! So, given I had “seniority”, I was assigned to the task of organizing this lunch. I wonder… Anyway, between the buddies we argue back and forth as to where and, in the end, we chose a “safe” place, which ended up being Cardero’s.

After weeks of travelling, it was time to meet once again with former co-workers. After all, never burn the bridges! The fact we were all working in the Downtown Vancouver area, made things slightly easier; however, there was still the usual question… Where? Given my reluctance of going to places like Cactus Club or Joey’s made things slightly more “difficult” (as it is usually a safe option, thought safe might not necessarily work for me). That threw a wrench to the organizer but, eventually, a place was decided: Sala Thai.
