As mentioned in yesterday’s post, I shuffled this post and decided to put dessert first. Hey, who does not like dessert? Oh, wait, me not necessarily… But back to this post: I have started to have this “trend”: depending on how the project concluded (even the small parts), I might decide to splurge a little bit on that last meal before coming back to Vancouver. The fact that Seattle had so many options made it somewhat difficult, specially considering that Lola disappointed. Instead, I decided to go to a place that was well regarded but of an establishment type that I haven’t had that much chance to try in Vancouver (until recently that is): a bistro. That place ended up being Le Pichet.

In most major cities, there is a local celebrity chef. In Vancouver, we have figures like Rob Feenie (prior to his departure of Lumiere and Feenie’s), John Bishop, Robert Clark (known for the Ocean Wise program) and so on. In Seattle, you have Tom Douglas, who has open five restaurants with different types of cuisine. For today’s post, my visit to one of them: Lola.

In the last couple of weeks, I have been going to Edmonds area for some errands. It is both good and bad – if you go a bit past Highgate to the east, there isn’t much to see. If you go the other ways, specially north east and west, there are some interesting places to go, like Lhy Thai. On one of these errands, I decided to stop in a place that I have meant to go for some time: Bernie’s Balkan Kitchen. However, due to their odd schedule, it has been in to go list for a while. But, one day…

If you have noticed the trend of the posts this week, there was that chance that it would have been Asian after Asian after Asian post. While I could have (I have a post in the queue for Honolulu Cafe), I would rather switch and shuffle them around before anybody “complains”, hehehe. Again, during the end year break, I did something I seldom have the chance to do: go out for breakfast. I normally eat breakfast at home but this day, I woke up “late”. After going through the usual routine , it was already 10:00 a.m., which is way past my normal breakfast time and way too early for lunch. And while I have no particular love for brunch, I guess, by that time of the day, there is not much you can do (other than starve until lunchtime). While I could have gone anywhere open (keyword here: open!), I wanted something more particular. That was the reason I went to The Three Lions Cafe.

It is “fortunate” that, so far (and knock on wood), nobody has complained that I blog a bit too much about a particular cuisine. *cough*Sherman*cough*. While it is true that most of us have favourites, in my case, my mom’s home cooking, I try to go outside of my “familiar zone”. Korean, for example, is a cuisine that I have started to slowly explore (though I sometimes ask myself if it is a good idea to go to a Korean restaurant by yourself). I am sure there are others – a lot others… So, when I “met” (on-line, so far) Darina who blogs Gratinée – Musings on Food & Culture and became aware of her Eastern European heritage, I had to ask that question: What restaurant(s) and dishes would she recommend? After a couple of emails back and forth, I ended up going to Danube European Restaurant.

Ukrainian Village

Lately, I have started to worry that I am starting to run out of places near my workplace to eat. Well, there are high-end places which are unlikely I will go anytime soon. But, then there are places that you simply overlook because they are so inconspicuous. One of these places happens to be Ukrainian Village, a small restaurant in Denman near Robson Street which I have seen there but never thought on visiting. But, in a random set of events, I ended up there.

In my Bon’s Off Broadway post, I mentioned what I usually have for breakfast. I am sure writing about cereals is not too exciting so, on an odd day last week, I took it off and, well, as you can guess, go to a breakfast place. Oh, wait, take that back: I had my regular breakfast that day, instead, I chose go to Cafe Medina for an early lunch but ordering from their breakfast menu. And, as some of you might now, Cafe Medina is an offspring of Chambar, a well known restaurant in Vancouver, so it ought to be good, right?
