Different cultures have different standards. In my case, being born Chinese, specifically Cantonese, means there is almost no boundaries as to what I can’t eat (which helps because, as far as I know, I do not have any food allergies). However, that is not the case with other cultures, where they have some dietary restrictions. For example, in the case of Muslims, there is the concept of halal and, in the case of Jewish, the concept of kosher. In the case of halal, several middle eastern restaurants in Vancouver have the halal certified sign but, in the case of kosher, not that I could find. But, Sherman found about Maple Grill and asked the usual question… Who is up for it?

My next to last post associated in a way to the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games! Now, don’t get me wrong, it was a blast but, alas, all good things must come to an end…
So, how this post is related in any way to the Olympics? In two ways: first, I mentioned it in my Where to Eat post and, second, after a failed visit to Atlantic Canada House (one of the few Canada exhibits I completely failed to visit), I wanted lunch and Go Fish was the option I had in mind. So, there you go, my explanation of why Go Fish! (Let’s face it, do I *really* need an explanation of why I like to eat???

Betty’s Fish & Chips
4850 Imperial Street
Burnaby, BC

There are times when, for good or for bad, a restaurant close, it is cherished for what it was or simply forgotten. However, when a restaurant re-opens, one might wonder if it is in name only or it is really a spiritual reincarnation of its former self. Now, I am not talking about re-branding themselves (read: Fuel into Re-Fuel) or changing its theme (Gastropod into Maenam). We are talking about the same restaurant, same food. Something like Wally’s Burger which met its demise when its lease wasn’t renewed in its former Kingsway location but reopened last summer in Cates Park in North Vancouver. However, that new place was, in my opinion, a shadow of its former self… And then there is Betty’s Fish and Chips, an out of the way fish and chips place in Burnaby, not far from Metropolis at Metrotown, which claims to be the best fish and chips in town. If that is true, how come it closed to re-open?

Sorry, I messed up and did not take a picture of the outside… >_<

Moby Dick Restaurant

Among the different theories for the source name “Panama”, the place I was raised, is that of “Land of Many Fishes”. Whether that is true or not, doesn’t really matter. The truth is that there is a great variety of fish and seafood there. Among the most popular ways to cook it is that of marinating it in citrus (i.e., ceviche) and frying it. Some might call it a waste but, when it is good, does it matter? So, during our last visit to The Irish Heather for a Long Table Series, I was talking to Mark and the topic of fish and chips popped. When asked which restaurant had it, I said “whole fried fish in Panama”. Of course, the question was the best fish and chips in Metro Vancouver, not to mention the fish fillet rather than bone-in. Anyway, my answer was “Moby Dick in White Rock”. Funnily, that was the place I suggested Mijune (of Follow Me Foodie) to meet the first time (which, instead ended up being Baru Latino). And, guess who I went with this time? Yup, it was Mijune!

Hundred of locations in the US

I am not a fan of malls. While I do go there for other reasons, if given the options, I would rather be somewhere else. However, when you are not in a major city, sometimes you can’t help it, specially when you are not from town. Also, a lot of restaurants would choose them as a spot to open. It might be a gamble for independent ones; not necessarily so for chains which has a corporate backing behind it. The major mall in the area happens to be Bridgewater Commons and one night I chose to drop by. Food court? Check; however, I went somewhere else instead. While there was other sit down restaurants there as well, I couldn’t find them (it happened they were partially “detached” from the main mall). Hungry, I ended up going to the one I was able to find: McCormick and Schmick’s Seafood

Cockney Kings Fish & Chips

Despite there were interesting options during my trip to Scottsdale (again, there were several dozen restaurants in the couple of block radius near my hotel), I have to mention I wanted to come back to Vancouver. Sure, weather was nicer in Scottsdale but Vancouver is the place I now call home. The night after I came back, I wanted something “Vancouver” and, being a coastal city, what “better” option that fish and chips? Of course, given all the options in the city, the usual question is “where”? Not wanting to drive to Steveston, I looked for other options and, as a result, I ended up in Cockney Kings Fish & Chips.

(Dollarton) Crab Shop
121 – 2455 Dollarton Highway
North Vancouver, BC

Earlier this summer, I drove through Dollarton Highway to go to Cates Park to try the burgers from Wally’s Burger (which was blogged here). Wally’s Burger was a disappointment but, on my way there, I noticed one place that caught my attention: Dollarton Crab Shop – or simply Crab Shop. I recall reference to this place because it was closed years ago due to a fire and lots of people were awaiting/wondering if they would ever re-open. It is a long drive (not THAT long but) and I partially forgot about it. Until, that is, my visit to Pajo’s (again, blogged here). So, on a weekend, I decided to drive to North Vancouver for fish and chips. Hey, if I would drive all the way to Steveston, why won’t I drive to North Van, specially considering that most of the trip will be on “highways”!
