Peckinpah
2 Water Street
Vancouver, BC

It is sort of known that I don’t necessarily like fancy restaurants. That does not mean I won’t go to them, just that a lot of times, those restaurants carry heavier price tags and a lot of that price tag is not translated necessarily into what ends up on the plate. Instead, it goes to things “around” it – like ambiance. However, at times, that’s what can draw people together for a meal. I mean, a dive is not necessarily conduciveto get people together and spend 2+ hours just to catch up.
So, how does that relate to Peckinpah, a somewhat recently restaurant opened in Gastown? Well, for one, it is the area, as Gaston is one of the places I call “usual suspects”, i.e., areas of town where people go for ambiance (the others people Downtown, Yaletown and Kitsilano). The second part is that out of all possible cuisines, this is BBQ, one that has humble origins… So, how do these do combine together?

Jules Casual French Bistro
216 Abbott Street
Vancouver, BC

On Monday’s post, I made reference to my visit (along with Sherman) to Luda. I am sure some of you might wonder how we come up with ideas of where to go and when. Well, it is as simple as this:
(Receiving an email with the subject “Random dinner”)
“Do you want to go to restaurant X”
“Sure, why not!”
The only issue at times is when there are more people. Don’t get me wrong, when it comes to food, to me, it falls in the category of the more the merrier. However, that also involves a bit of logistics to make sure everybody can make it, to a place everybody wants to go. After all, we want to eat, not fight over minor details. But, in this case, Sherman suggested Jules Casual French Bistro in Gastown. While I am not a fan of Gastown (nor Yaletown, Kitsilano or West Side for that matter), I am willing to venture to these areas, if I know there is something worth trying or with good company. For the food itself, not necessarily so because, more often than not, based on previous experiences, it is over-hyped, over-priced and, for the most part, it is more of a be-seen type environment. But, given I was in good company…

Long Table Series @ The Irish Heather
208 Carrall Street
Vancouver, BC

Here we go again! For the third time, we had a mini gathering at The Irish Heather for a Long Table Series. My previous visit was blogged here (I chose not to blog my second visit and deferred that visit to my other fellow bloggers) but given it is a decent meal for cheap, we chose to have another gathering, this time hoping to meet new, upcoming food bloggers. Unfortunately, due to other circumstances, including short notice, only that many food bloggers were able to attend. They were…
Anita of La Petite Foodie – Post is here!
Jessica of Yum-o-Rama
Mijune of Follow Me Foodie – Post is here!
Sherman of Sherman’s Food Adventures – Post is here!
But, still, with good food and even better company…!

Long Table Series @ The Irish Heather

Note: This was originally posted on August 19, 2009. I thought to “bump” it as last week, I went with some fellow bloggers for another iteration of the Long Table Series at The Irish Heather. For today’s post, please see next post or click here. As for this dinner, needless to say, it was a blast: good, cheap food, with booze served along and with lots of people who share your passion for food. Fellow bloggers who attended were:
Jenny (and Ricky) of My Secret Eden – post is up!
Danny of Five Loaves – post is up!
Jessica (and Mark) of Yum-O-Rama – post is up!
Jonathan of Food and Tell – post is up!
Joyce and Frank of Foodies Adventures in Vancouver – check Joyce’s perspective and Frank’s perspective.
Kevin of 604 Foodtography – post is up!
Sherman of Sherman’s Food Adventures – post is up!
Reader and frequent commenter Anita.
Jenny with Ricky and Joyce with Frank chose to have dessert on-site; however, some of us decided to go to Dulcinea for dessert afterwards. Hopefully that will be blogged as well!
As mentioned on my post Monday on No. 1 Beef Noodle House, there are places I have not gone for several reasons. Now, I will add another reason: Because I am uncool. I can go on and on on this topic; let’s just say that I don’t follow most trends and/or activities people my age would usually do. As an odd consequence, there are areas I don’t feel like going, which translates into restaurants that it will be unlikely I will visit. Which areas? Yaletown, Gastown, et al. So, when I read about the Long Table Series, I wanted to go; however, I felt the need to go with somebody else. Fortunately, Ms. H was happy to tag along…
