Taste of the City 2009

I guess I am starting to make this into a trend, hehehehe. As part of the on-going summer (food-related) events in Vancouver, yesterday, I went to the Pacific National Exhibition for an event called CityTv’s Taste of the City. And what is this event? Organized by CityTV, one of the local television system, it is all about food, as the name suggests. In this case, over 20 restaurants would showcase some of their dishes and the samples would cost between $1 to $4.

Well, hell has frozen over. As if their second location in Burrard & Pender was not enough, Japadog has opened a third location, this time in Coal Harbour Community Centre…

In my post last week on Long’s Noodle House, I mentioned my trip to Richmond… Virginia… ^_^;;; Unlike my previous business trips, where I would be for almost the whole week, this was a short one and, since the customer wanted me to be on a Monday, I chose to fly during the weekend. When I arrived, I found out something disappointing of Richmond, VA: If it wasn’t because of offices, library or some US government buildings, it was pretty much a dead area. Of course, it was possible I was, again, in a “dead” part of the city… Anyway, I shouldn’t be complaining about things like this but, rather, just focus on the food. So, for today’s post, one of the two restaurants I visited during this trip (the other place I had my meals was the hotel restaurant, something I would rather not blog…). So, what was particular about this restaurant? It just happened it was suggested by a colleague who was there just before me…

If people do a little bit of digging in Urbanspoon, they will find that the “best” restaurant Vancouver is not even a restaurant – it is a hot dog stand. And that hot dog stand happens to be Japadog, located in Burrard and Pender. Thanks to their success, they have opened a second location a couple of blocks down in the corner of Burrard and Pender. Would they able to carry the success? (On that note, I have blogged about Japadog previously. Check here).

If you check Eat, Snap, Repeat’s post, you will notice a long queue. Not in the picutre above. The secret? Go after hours! ^_^

Japa Dog

A hot dog is a hot dog is a hot dog, right? I mean, how different can a hot dog from one stand be from a hot dog from another stand? After all, when the sausage is usually from the same couple of providers, it must be something else that makes one stand from the other. So, here we have JapaDog, a hot dog stand in the north-west corner of Burrard and Smithe, in Downtown Vancouver. Doesn’t the name alone suggest something? Yup, a Japanese motif…

The menu.

Since I seldom have hot dogs, hey, I might as well go for broke; in this case, their “special”: the kuro-buta ($5.50): black pig pork sausage. According to the sign for the kurobuta, this is the pork equivalent of the wagyu (a “special” Japanese beef). Unlike the other hot dogs, it does not have any “special” dressing: just the sausage, friend onions and the bread. I added mustard (and ONLY mustard!) to the hot dog. After the first bite, I almost dropped the hot dog… I could not believe it. It really stood out compared to other hot dogs I had in the past. And, as mentioned above, I already settled for just an average dog but this one proved me completely wrong…

I planned for only one hot dog; but after finishing the kuro-buta, I could not help to think, what about the “regular” dogs? So, I couldn’t help myself and order a second hot dog, in this case the teri-mayo ($4.25). This one has, as the name might suggest, teriyaki sauce, Japanese mayo and Japanese seaweed. After the first bite, I found out it didn’t taste the same as the kuro-buta, but it proved me something: Toppings do make a difference! Sure, it might be a fad but, until I start seeing more hot dog stands with this unusual toppings, next time I crave for hot dog, I will be here!
