While we can’t deny there a lot of good eats in Vancouver, we do not have one thing: an iconic restaurant – that one place we people would fly here and should/have to try (whether the food is actually good or bad, that is a different story). This is despite author Jennifer 8. Lee considered Zen Chinese Cuisine to have the best Chinese food outside of China. But, then again, with restaurants almost semi-constantly changing ownership/management/head chefs (best example being that of Lumiere and Rob Feenie), not to mention closing down – including the before mentioned Zen, when it fails the test of time, well, you simply can’t create those roots for the restaurant to grasp and grow. Then again, Vancouver is a relatively young city so we can give it a bit of leeway. That is not necessarily the case for New York City, where it has developed landmark restaurants, where locals still go in masses and tourists are curious about, which is my third criteria in my culinary adventure in New York City: a visit to a semi-iconic restaurant. And the “chosen” one was Carnegie Deli.

Earlier today, my post on Artichoke Basille’s Pizza went up. In it I mentioned my three meal criteria in New York. This post tackles the second criteria, i.e.:
2) Ask a friend who lived/has lived in New York City for a suggestion of a place that will not break the piggy bank.
Now, I was on a business trip which meant I was under a meal allowance. However, that does not mean I should go for broke either. After all, unhappy customers is not good for business. So, for this purpose, I checked with my friend LB. My story with LB goes way back to high-school, though, due to some wacky circumstances, I was her senior at school despite our age difference was just a couple of months. While we kept in touch once in a blue moon, we eventually disconnected from each other, until about a bit over a year ago, we found out we both moved out of Panama – she moving to New York City (not necessarily to Manhattan, though) and me to Vancouver. And that happened about the same time! After reminiscing old times and common friends (yup, that’s you AY and GA!), later that day, we decided to have an early dinner. At that time, we were near NY Penn Station, specifically, in Koreatown and I asked where she would go for dinner with the criteria above. She suggested as Asian restaurant that a friend of hers suggested. It was a small walk (as if we hadn’t walked the whole day already!) and we arrived to Aura Thai.

Here is the challenge: three meals in New York, where to eat… What to eat! Rather than me scratching my head, I set up three criterias:
1) Ask a fellow blogger (not necessarily from New York) for suggestions.
2) Ask a friend who lived/has lived in New York City for a suggestion of a place that will not break the piggy bank.
3) Go to a semi-iconic place.
This post tackles point #1 (point #2 will come noon today and #3 will be tomorrow Saturday!), where I asked fellow blogger Sherman for a suggestion of a place I should visit in New York City. He pointed out several ones and, while it was all good, I had one problem: Transportation. For the most part, I was relying in either walking around or public transit which meant my range would be really limited (with my “central” location being New York Penn Station). And, while I have been told that NYC’s public transit is quite good, after a couple of runs with it, I prefer Vancouver’s… Anyway, I thought that after my visit to Ah-Beetz in Abbotsford which serves NY style pizza, I might as well try a pizza from New York! Of course, there are the iconic places, like Di Fara and Lombardi’s; however, there were issues with both places: either, it was too far or had to buy the whole pie. And, then, there was Ray’s which ended up being like a chain… That would have been all good but, instead, I went for a somewhat unconventional option: Artichoke Basille’s Pizza & Brewery.

Yesterday, I wrote about my visit to New York City. Reality is, I am not that much into Broadway shows or similar activities that New York City is known of. Instead, me being a lone-wolf type person, I prefer to do activities of my own. And the “best” such activity in New York City? A visit to Central Park! Here is my photo essay of that visit.

No, no kidding! When I was in New York City, as per today’s earlier post, I noticed certain familiar coffee shop, hehehehe. I know, everybody has his/her opinion of Tim Horton’s but this post is not about that. After all, I was not following the Where Should I Eat? Fast Food Flowchart! Instead, this post is about how does their offerings compare to the ones found here.

As you should have noticed on last week’s posts, I was in New Jersey. How long? How about two weeks! So, during the weekend, I decided to, once again, make the best out of my trip: In this case, go to New York city, the Big Apple! Here is a photo essay of places I went. Please, sit down and enjoy the ride!
