I have mentioned previously about my Friday night activities but, last weekend, I had an additional session on Sunday afternoon. Or, so I thought. In the end, nobody came for this session. Oh, well…. However, that gave me an opportunity to try the restaurants in the Hastings area that otherwise I won’t try (due to they being close by the time I leave the area on Friday nights). But, since it was noon, almost all places were open. So, for this trip, I went to Bao Chau Vietnamese Restaurant.

According to Eat, Snap, Repeat‘s theory of ramen in Vancouver, the “quality” of the final product is inversely proportional to the distance from the corner of Robson and Denman (in Vancouver’s West End, where Kintaro, Benkei and Motomachi Shokudo are located). Of course, there is the occasional deviation from that theory like Menya and it did not take into consideration new places in Richmond like G-Men Ramen. For today’s post, a sort-of new kid on the block – Kawawa Japanese Ramen in, out of all places, the largest mall in this side of Canada: Metropolis at Metrotown.

There are some places I would like to go (either for the first time or more often) but have not for several reasons. Location (Le Charcuterie?), schedule (Moderne Burger, which closes before 8:00 p.m.), costs (too many to mention) and an empty table/parking lot… The last one might be puzzling: If you have a bit of patience, you could get one. But, when you are hungry, logic simply goes out the window. That is one of the reasons I haven’t been to No. 1 Beef Noodle House: every time I have been there, the parking lot is full (and parking on the street is not an option). But, finally I succeeded…

Yup, yet another summer festival! After being disappointed with the Caribbean Days Festival last week, I had higher expectations for this weeks’: The Powell Street Festival! As for the festivities, according to their site, it is to celebrate the arts and culture of Japanese Canadians and Asian Canadians, to encourage Asian Canadians to take a leadership role in the development of the arts in Canada, and to foster community development through cultural events. However, I will have to say it is not that much Asian but mainly Japanese. Not complaining here! Enjoy this photo essay.

One good thing about working in Vancouver Downtown is that, after work, you have access to a lot of restaurants within walking distance. Whether it is a pub to have drinks to wind down, burgers for something “familiar”, bistros for something different, etc., you can find almost anything. One night after work, I was doing exactly that, walking around checking possible new spots. However, when hunger strikes at the beginning of the stroll, well, you just go to the first one that catch your attention, won’t you? I happened to be near H-Mart (where Matoi Sushi and Wang Ga Ma are located) when I noticed a new Vietnamese hole-in-the-wall – Viet Sub Vietnamese Cuisine.

This picture was taken on another day during lunch time, not on my first visit!

South Vancouver is not a place known for late eats. In fact, most places might be closed by 9:00 p.m. (other than some bubble tea spots, which I do not necessarily look forward to). Sure, I could drive farther north to places likes Corner 23 on Cambie (visit pending) or west to Kitsilano. Heck, even Downtown Vancouver. However, when hunger strikes, you don’t necessarily think straight and, instead, you go for almost the first place you can think of and/or run into. That place this time ended up being Takarabune.

A couple of weeks ago I received an email from Ben of Chowtimes, where, he along with Christina of Doesn’t TaZte Like Chicken suggested we should have a food bloggers meeting. They were graceful to reschedule the initial scheduled date, as I was travelling to Richmond… OK, before I continue, here is a really funny joke. A friend also check with me to have dinner on the day following the scheduled date. So, I casually tell him I could not as I would be on my way to Richmond. There is a small pause and then he says “6:00 p.m., it is then?”. What happens is that, for us here in BC, Richmond means Richmond, BC (where, technically YVR, the airport, is located); I was going to Richmond, VA! (Yes, there will be some posts on Richmond, VA coming soon). Something similar happened when I told my friends in Panama I went to Sydney, everybody thought I went to Sydney, NZ, whereas I actually went to Sydney, NS – not to mention there is also a Sidney, BC. I am digressing here…

So, other fellow bloggers who came to this event included, in addition to Ben and Suanne of Chowtimes, ET and Christina of Doesn’t Tazte Like Chicken:

And the location suggested? Long’s Noodle House, which Ben and Suanne have visited previously and blogged. Well, they have been there and it is highly recommended so, hey!

You ought to love stock pictures; I completely forgot to take a picture of the exterior before walking in…
