After been back in town, it was time to tackle the remaining food carts in Vancouver. After all, given my experience in Re-Up BBQ, it was quite possible that my initial thoughts of food carts in Vancouver was mistaken and, actually, there was some glimmer of hope. That brings us to today’s post of another food cart in the Downtown Vancouver area: Chinese Skewer King, which, as the name suggests, has skewers. Can you go wrong with some meat-on-a-stick?

Some things go around and comes around, in a quasi cycle of cause and effect (aka Karma). In my case, I always believe that, if somebody does something for you, you should reciprocate and show gratitude. If you show generosity, it will be shown back to you. Such was the case of PO, who did a favour for me some time ago and, to thank him, I invited him for lunch. Of course, there is that eternal question of where. For no particular reason, I remind him of a (then) tapas place called Kosetsu (which I failed miserably to go with Mariko due to them not being open yet, as in we were there too early). However, that was months ago and, for some reason, it re-lanched themselves as a Korean restaurant named Kim Bob Chun Gook (now, this is based on what I saw, if the transliteration is correct, I can’t say!). OK, that sounds good so let’s go!

After weeks of travelling, it was time to meet once again with former co-workers. After all, never burn the bridges! The fact we were all working in the Downtown Vancouver area, made things slightly easier; however, there was still the usual question… Where? Given my reluctance of going to places like Cactus Club or Joey’s made things slightly more “difficult” (as it is usually a safe option, thought safe might not necessarily work for me). That threw a wrench to the organizer but, eventually, a place was decided: Sala Thai.

Again, catching up with my posts… Now that food carts have started to hit the streets of Vancouver in full force, I thought I should put one of these such places first. For today’s post, one of the places that opened first, almost a month ago (and which visit was almost a month ago as well!): Re-Up BBQ. The question would be: would selling only *one* item would be a deciding factor? After all, given my preference towards simple things…

If there is one thing I can say I am proud of is that I listen to my readers. From minor layout changes and, most importantly, suggestions: If you have something to say, as long as it makes sense, it is not burdensome and does not go against my code of ethics, it is pretty much fair game. That’s why I was quite excited when reader jlomein, in my Southern Kitchen post wrote the following:

Next time you’re in Washington you should check out Alligator Soul in Everett. It’s my favourite southern restaurant by far.

Well, that suggestion was quite interesting so why not! As a result, in the last trip through Everett, I decided to drop by to have a taste of Cajun/creole.

If somebody tells you that business travelling is great, I am willing to bet he/she is lying to you. Granted, there will be some perks when travelling for business, like me being able to visit different local restaurants; however, it also takes a toll on your social and personal life – assuming you have one that is, or to quote that South Park in Make Love, Not Warcraft, “How do you kill that which has no life?”. (If you want to take a partial glimpse of people travelling for business, I highly suggest you watch Up in the Air). Considering my status, I take it in strides and enjoy all the restaurants the city/town I am has to offer. And, in this case, while in Portland, I was looking for something that isn’t found in Vancouver (yeah, despite we claim to be diverse, there is only that much Chinese restaurants I can digest – in the case of Vancouver, it is already way past a dozen too many): Hawaiian. And, among the different options, Bamboo Grove

Pambiche

I don’t recall/remember/know how or when this began but, somehow, I have been deemed to be the subject-matter expert when it comes to Latin American food. Don’t get me wrong, I do really appreciate people think that is the case; however, I am not sure to what extent my expertise goes, as Latin America cuisine goes in almost all directions: from meat in Argentina, to seafood in Peru, to spices in the West Indies. The list goes on and on. But, rather than taking it for granted, I take it as a challenge. So why bring this? Since our showing of Latin food in Vancouver is heavily skewed towards Mexican, other Latin cuisines have been extremely shadowed by it. The only growing sprouts of other Latin cuisine have been Peruvian (El Inka Deli and Mochikas, which I still have to go) and Salvadorean (Rinconcito Salvadoreño) but even then, they are “forced” to serve Mexican dishes because the public “demands” it. But, given I was in the US, with a heavier Latin, non-Mexican influx, I thought I should give these other places a try. And the place is one of the top rated restaurants in Portland and which Sherman heavily recommended me give it a try: Pambiche.
