I apologize for making things so stereotypical at times. You see, whenever I am down in the US, I try to go to restaurants unique to that place. For example, when I was in New York City, I went to Carnegie Deli; when I was in Panama, there was Mi Ranchito – and that was among a lot of restaurants. The “problem” is that Seattle is ~300 Km from Vancouver and, for the most part, you can find an equivalent here. To make the most of it, the key is to find cuisines/known restaurants not available here, which, more often than not, it translates to American or Latin-American restaurants – or even tacos, though I am not that enthusiastic to try this. So, just for kicks, this time, I tried to look for a form of Asian and, in the end, I decided to go for Vietnamese. That’s how I ended up going to Green Leaf Vietnamese restaurant.

Shiro’s Sushi

If you were to go to a sushi restaurant, how much are you willing to spend? I am sure that most people won’t be willing to fork more than $30. At that price point, some say something on the lines of “I might as well go to an all-you-can-eat”. To those who plan to bash me for saying that, I will admit, I used to belong to that group. Used to is, of course, the key phrase. I have learned that food that you can’t prepare yourself and have some level of enticement will lead big $$. Of course, like most of you, I have a budget and going to a restaurant that will require me to go for a filet-o-fish afterwards isn’t something I would consider either.

But, going back to the sushi restaurant question. I have observed that, for most people, sushi equals to makizushi or rolls. For the most part, I won’t argue with you if you like it that way; however, it takes away the skill of the chef. After all, if you throw in a jagged/below average cut of fish in a roll, chances are you won’t notice it (unlike, say, sashimi or nigiri sushi). However, I will give them some points due to the fact it can be more “shareable” compared to nigiri sushi, which I usually end up getting, as I usually go out by myself.

That brings then the issue of economics. Between $3 to $10 a roll, most people will be satisfied to a certain extent. Satisfied their sushi craving and ready to move on. But, given the commonality of such dish in Vancouver (are there more Starbucks or sushi restaurants in Vancouver, anyway?), one way to entice customers is to lower their price at the expense of quality. But, when the majority of customers accept that compromise, at times, there is nothing preventing these restaurants to go even lower (usually by lowering quality) to satisfy the customer’s demands. At one point, if people see a piece of nigiri sushi for $4, they might say you will be nuts to pay for that single morsel…

Finally, summarizing all this, it brings me back to the sushi restaurants I have visited: for the most part, these are Chinese or Korean owned, which follows the consumer demand/quality trend mentioned above (some more towards one side than the other). Of course, I have been to Japanese owned and operated, as well (Shima-Ya). However, I also believe I should try something “better” (short of travelling to Japan, like ET and Christina of Doesn’t TaZte Like Chicken did). And, in a fortunate turn of events, I was in Seattle with a meal budget and decided to visit a Japanese owned and operated – Shiro’s Sushi.

Yesterday, I mentioned about fast food chains trying to outdo each other. But, do we food bloggers try to outdo each other as well? I have the hunch that some food bloggers try to avoid interaction with others; however, those who stick together, well, some friendly rivalry can’t be denied. After Sherman went to Zakkushi and got a bukkake… soba, that is, I was wondering if I could out do that post. So, when I was in Seattle/Tukwila, I thought I could go for a BJ… Burger, in BJs Brewery, that is…

As mentioned in yesterday’s post, I shuffled this post and decided to put dessert first. Hey, who does not like dessert? Oh, wait, me not necessarily… But back to this post: I have started to have this “trend”: depending on how the project concluded (even the small parts), I might decide to splurge a little bit on that last meal before coming back to Vancouver. The fact that Seattle had so many options made it somewhat difficult, specially considering that Lola disappointed. Instead, I decided to go to a place that was well regarded but of an establishment type that I haven’t had that much chance to try in Vancouver (until recently that is): a bistro. That place ended up being Le Pichet.

While this is part of the meal I had on my last night in Seattle, I decided to switch order here, i.e., I chose to post about dessert first. I myself I am not a person with sweet tooth; however, once in a while, I will go for it. This was such the case. After our meal in Le Pichet (the topic of tomorrow’s post), I took OF for some tea. Sure, it was “late” already but, at the end of this phase of the project, I though we might as well give this a chance. So, I decided to drive to one of the best known such spot in Seattle, B & O Espresso.

In most major cities, there is a local celebrity chef. In Vancouver, we have figures like Rob Feenie (prior to his departure of Lumiere and Feenie’s), John Bishop, Robert Clark (known for the Ocean Wise program) and so on. In Seattle, you have Tom Douglas, who has open five restaurants with different types of cuisine. For today’s post, my visit to one of them: Lola.

“You haven’t been to The Cheesecake Factory?!” That was the reaction of both Sherman and Mijune when I was asking them for options of eateries in the Washington. In the past I have chosen not to go to chains, unless it is a local/regional chain because, let’s face it, pretty much you can go there when options run out. However, there was some enthusiasm and a partial endorsement from both that I thought I should give it a try. So, here it goes!
