Back when the original set of food carts came out, the one that we had to admit was a bit “different” from the rest was PanDa Fresh Bakery. While some of them would be as expected in other cultures (skewers from Chinese Skewer King and Satay King), others went for fusion (Cartel Taco, et al) and some went for old school type (pizza from Ragazzi, pulled pork sandwich from Re-Up and crepes from “>Kimono Koi Crepes), the folks from PanDa made a twist by offering stuffed croissants. Alas, it seems things went sort of sideways and they have come back in the form of Lully’s Sandwich.

I will not hesitate to give credit to where/whom is due. In this particular case, Derek Ip who is related to/operates PanDa Fresh Bakery (from here on “PanDa”) has been quite active in the blogosphere, not only by promoting their own food cart but also spreading the word of other food carts in town. In other words, your good neighbour. However, that also meant that, since I have been going to a couple of food carts here and there, I would eventually visit PanDa. Well, today might have been as good as any day…

Well, it seems this is a trend for me in the last couple of weeks: Working my way through the different food carts, with a post per week. Except for the lemonade stand in English Bay and still-haven’t-seen-it-yet-it-is-supposed-to-exist Licious Living cart (once, again, supposedly between in Granville between Dunsmiur and Georgia), I think I have pretty much visited all of the food carts in Downtown, which means I have to start tackling those outside of this area, namely Panda Bakery in Yaletown, Eli’s Serious Sausage in Cambie (near Broadway), the falafel shop near Main and Terminal (which, according to James of Vancouver Street Eats, opened and closed, destiny to be determined) and the mysterious noodle cart in 49th and Cambie. (There is also a mysterious one in Robson Square which hasn’t opened yet). So, for today’s post, one of the remaining carts: Poke’m.

Last week, in my Fresh Local Wild post, I made a comment saying Arturo’s Mexico to Go, specifically they should create a Twitter account to notify when they are open/closed. While that hasn’t been address as of the day of this post, I was advised Arturo’s is now back in business so, finally, I was able to drop by!

Before I go to today’s post, an open message to the owners of Arturo’s Mexico to Go: You guys . I have been trying to go to the location listed in your site for last two weeks for lunch and, every single time, you are NOT there. From the grapevine, I have heard something happened to your truck. If that’s the case, c’mon guys, how difficult is to set up a Twitter account, linked from your site telling us if you are open or closed? *Shakes fist!!!!*

OK, back to today’s post. Given my work location in the West End, I have tried almost every single food cart so far, with the exception of Poke’m, which, as per their site, is currently upgrading their cart for the impending rainy Vancouver fall and the before mentioned Arturo’s Mexican to Go. Of course, there are still others but I haven’t visited yet, for example, PanDa Fresh Bakery, because they are slightly outside of my range for lunch on work days. Eventually… So, when I heard yet another food cart/truck – Fresh Local Wild – was about to open, I jumped at the opportunity to give it a try. Their call to fame? All our food is sustainable and responsibly harvested – Ocean Wise. To me, it is whether it taste good or not…

Again, catching up with my posts… Now that food carts have started to hit the streets of Vancouver in full force, I thought I should put one of these such places first. For today’s post, one of the places that opened first, almost a month ago (and which visit was almost a month ago as well!): Re-Up BBQ. The question would be: would selling only *one* item would be a deciding factor? After all, given my preference towards simple things…

Nong’s Khao Man Gai

In a way, it was doomed to happen. Given my (somewhat unfair?) comparison of street food from outside North American to the ones in North America, it was almost certain that I had to visit an Asian one for comparison sake. And that brought the eternal question of… Which one(s)? I mean, given that the US can be as multi-cultural as Canada and, in part, I didn’t want to disappoint, I kept looking and looking around. While searching in other sites (Urbanspoon included), all of them seemd to point to two locations: Koi Fusion, which served Tex-Mex dishes with a Korean twish (take that Roaming Dragon, you are NOT the first! :P ) and Nong’s Khao Man Gai, a cart that sells one and only one dish. While I am sure a lot of you would think that Koi Fusion would have been a better choice (due to a direct comparison with Roaming Dragon), the fact is that I wanted instead showcase what street food ought to be. And, in that case, Nong’s Khao Man Gai was a better option.
