Ebisu on Robson

A couple of years ago, I remember there was a Hooters in Vancouver. I myself was not interested in going there because, well, since I did not drink back then, there was no particular reason for me to go [*]. (Will pass the “smiles”, thanks for asking). Years passed and that location closed down to open then Ebisu. For some reason, I haven’t been there. Period. Not that I was under the impression the food was good or bad; simply I did not feel like it. However, that changed when some colleagues suggested that place. And on that particular day? I did not have my camera with me. That meant going back a second time…
[*] Interestingly, almost a year to the date, I wrote about Hooters but it was under a somewhat stressing circumstance. Check my post here.

On my last night in Scottsdale, I was able to take my “unwind stroll” at a later time but not that late. Rather than walking through the same area, I chose to go to a place I haven’t been previously, though, as you can imagine, I had a mission in mind. Similar to what I did when I went to Miramar, I decided to visit a sushi spot, this time, it would be in the middle of the dessert… Am I nuts?! I mean, without a large body of water nearby, that means any seafood-based product would be flown here, right? How about freshness and what not (*)? Even with that in mind, I somehow wanted to give it a try. Out of all sushi spots nearby (and believe me, there were several!), I chose to go to Pure Sushi.
(*): Actually, that is not usually an issue provided the seafood was flash-frozen not long after it has been caught. But, of course, people who is concerned with carbon footprint, you may cry now.

Call it a personal, unofficial test of a theory. A lot of people think that outside of Japan, the Pacific Northwest, specially Seattle and Vancouver is among the best places to have sushi. Now, I know that high end places can be found outside this region (Nobu in several locations, Morimoto in Philly, et al) but, for average consumers, according to this “theory”, it does not get any better. So what is my test about? Well, I want to know how other places do compared to Vancouver and, to do so, I went to “average” places. Was that a good idea? When I arrived at Miramar, one of the several nearby places was Ra Sushi. OK, don’t kill me! I know it is a chain restaurant but that was a nearby place. When I was driving to that location, I arrive at a gate (as in a gated community). I couldn’t see anybody so rather than inquiring in the middle of nowhere, I turned around. So, the question was where next? I went back to the hotel and started to check Urbanspoon for nearby sushi places. In the end, I checked Miami’s 100 best restaurants list and located Eddie Hill’s Sushi Thai (or just “Sushi Thai”)…

Feel free to call it alignment of the stars of just because an atom happened to be in a place at the exact time: This post had to do with two very strange topics: perception of sushi and omakase. The first topic is related to a post written by Foodosophy team regarding sushi – you can find it here. It is a really worthwhile read; it might even change your thoughts about sushi. Go ahead, this post will still be here… The second topic is that of omakase, a concept not that different of a tasting menu; here, you “entrust” to the chef to prepare a meal for you. So what Lime Japanese Cuisine has to do with both? It just happened that due to the comments regarding Lime, I was ready to dismiss it but, based on Foodosophy’s team, I was encouraged to give it a second chance. I went there one late night for regular sushi or for soba; however, when I arrived, I noticed they made mention of their omakase menu, at a base price of $35. It was a leap of faith but I knew I had to do it…

It was one of those days I had to walk away from my workplace for lunch. It wasn’t that bad, it was just stressful and couldn’t just buy something, bring it back, eat it quickly and continue working – I needed a break by… I had to take a stroll, relax and “reset” myself. While walking up Robson Street, just past Hon’s and Don Guacamole’s, I noticed a new shop setting up: Donburi-ya. That really make me want to eat a bowl of steaming rice with some soy sauce and meat. Ah, some comfort food… The first place in my mind with such menu would have been Hon’s but didn’t really want to go there. Instead, that gave me a reason to drop Sushi Bento Express, a place better known for their sushi but still…

Sometimes, even the best laid plans will be put to a test when things happen. In my case, following post on Wok Box, I wanted to visit their new location near English Bay. The first day I tried to go, they were not open yet (“opening next Monday!”). Then, I try again on a Tuesday, they have a new sign saying “opening Wednesday!”. OK, let’s try Friday, then! At that point, when I saw the sign saying it wasn’t still open (due to unforeseeable circumstances), I just gave up and look for another place for lunch. There were some pubs but I wasn’t in mood for pub fare that day. Instead, there was this sushi place next to it: Sakari Sushi.

To those who have never been in Vancouver, there is an inside joke that goes like this: There are as many sushi shops as there are Starbucks. When a new one opens, the question is rather what it can bring that others haven’t done previously. Some clinch to authenticity (though, unfortunately, it is not something most accept or willing to fork the $$$); others, the flare (either in the form of “ambiance” or some odd ingredients or even visual presentation). And, a big majority trying to offer the best bang for the buck, usually in the form of an all-you-can-eat. So, when Sushi Mart opened over a week already, my question was: what does it bring that others don’t?
