In the last couple of weeks, I think we have had a good share of blog posts of Thai restaurants. I am not talking about myself, I only visited Tangthai with Victoria (and was also visited by other food bloggers) but Victoria also visited Maenam. And prior to that, shokutsu of Foodosophy, visited Lhy Thai. So, in its own funny way, I chose to semi-continue that trend by visiting that same restaurant, Lhy Thai.

Sherman (of Sherman’s Food Adventures) is “the man”. It was his turn to organize the next Vancouver food bloggers gathering and he managed to pull out the largest one ever. How large? I was able to get 8 food bloggers (plus guest) us in a Long Table Series at the Irish Heather. This time, he was able to get writers of 15 blogs (plus guests) of us! In attendance….

Ah, so many new restaurants opening, yet so little times at times… Tangthai is one of the newest restaurants opening near the corner of Robson and Denman where it is already well known to be the epicentre of ramen in Vancouver – where you can find Kintaro, Motomachi Shokudo and Benkei Ramen, all of them in the same block (plus the soon to be open Santouka in the next block). Thai cuisine is one of those that I know can be really bold, yet, for other reasons, it seems to be continuously bastardised to the point I am not sure if it can be considered ethnic anymore. True, I am Chinese and not a Thai expert in any way. So, for this purpose, I have been bugging Victoria (of Victoria’s Food Secrets), the in-house Thai food blogger expert in Vancouver, to help me check Tangthai: Would it pass her litmus test?

Not the best picture. I might retake this one…

One of the “nice” things of this type of blogging is that you get to meet new people and break the bread with them. Recently, I have noticed another food blogger – Victoria of Victoria’s Food Secrets – who, coincidentally, was blogging about restaurants in the Downtown area, where I work. I thought, hey, why not! So, I sent her an email and, after going back a forth a couple of times, we decided on Tropika on Robson. Unfortunately, due to somewhat unexpected circumstances, we couldn’t get ahold of a table in Tropika and switched to plan B, which ended up being a restaurant a couple of doors away: Thai House.

Aura Thai

Earlier today, my post on Artichoke Basille’s Pizza went up. In it I mentioned my three meal criteria in New York. This post tackles the second criteria, i.e.:

2) Ask a friend who lived/has lived in New York City for a suggestion of a place that will not break the piggy bank.

Now, I was on a business trip which meant I was under a meal allowance. However, that does not mean I should go for broke either. After all, unhappy customers is not good for business. So, for this purpose, I checked with my friend LB. My story with LB goes way back to high-school, though, due to some wacky circumstances, I was her senior at school despite our age difference was just a couple of months. While we kept in touch once in a blue moon, we eventually disconnected from each other, until about a bit over a year ago, we found out we both moved out of Panama – she moving to New York City (not necessarily to Manhattan, though) and me to Vancouver. And that happened about the same time! After reminiscing old times and common friends (yup, that’s you AY and GA!), later that day, we decided to have an early dinner. At that time, we were near NY Penn Station, specifically, in Koreatown and I asked where she would go for dinner with the criteria above. She suggested as Asian restaurant that a friend of hers suggested. It was a small walk (as if we hadn’t walked the whole day already!) and we arrived to Aura Thai.

At this point, I am sure followers of this blog should notice some patterns. One of those patterns is that, after I visit a restaurant, if there is a similar restaurant nearby, chances are I will visit it for comparison purposes. In this case, after visiting Thai Away Home a couple of weeks ago, there is no way I won’t try the competition nearby: Thida Thai.

Once again, I am on the look for something “different” to eat for lunch in the West End. While there are a lot of sushi spots, I did not want to go any one of them (comparison between these gets a bit tiring after a while). And there are several Korean restaurants but, somehow, I don’t feel too comfortable going there by myself. This time, that “something different” was Thai. I have blogged about one other Thai place previously, Khunnai Chang; however, after my initial post, I have been a couple too many times already. No, that won’t work. In the end, the Thai restaurant ended up being Thai Away Home in Davie.
