Al Basha

My dislike for Richmond is quite well know. Crazy drivers, small parking spaces, badly design parking locations, the list goes on and on. However, that isn’t the only part of Metro Vancouver I do not frequent. Vancouver West Side is another of such areas in town, despite there is no particular reason. Probably because of those houses I don’t think I will never have enough moola to purchase? Or, perhaps because there is that sense of “falsehood”. Probably because most of the restaurants are the type where there is more hype to be seen rather than what it is served on the plate? Or because, well, I have had a bad track there? Regardless of the reason, after my visit to the area on Greek Day, I found out there were actually small interesting shops. One of them happened to be Al Basha and I made a mental note to return “soon” and that is what I did…

Last year, around this time, I went to several festival (for eample, the Scandinavian Mid Summer Fest, Latin Summer Fest, Powell Street Festival and so on). One that I couldn’t make it was the Greek Day, as it conflicted with another personal matters (as mentioned in my Scandinavian Mid Summer Fest post above). Despite I went to Greek Summer Festival, in-lieu of the Greek Day, well, it isn’t necessarily the same. So, this year, I made sure I went to that festivity, despite the weather was un-summer like. But, hey, weather hasn’t stopped me before! So, without further ado, a small photo essay of this event.

Bistrot Bistro

I will be straight to the point, this post was scheduled on purpose for Good Friday… Read the why further down below!
Darina has mentioned a couple of times one of her favourite restaurants is Bistrot Bistro. With that in mind, Sherman (his posts of this visit here) had an interesting plan for it. Along with Mijune and myself, we went there with somewhat high expectations. The question was whether it would deliver – that is specially considering the last time we dine out together at La Brasserie, things went a bit sideways.

Different cultures have different standards. In my case, being born Chinese, specifically Cantonese, means there is almost no boundaries as to what I can’t eat (which helps because, as far as I know, I do not have any food allergies). However, that is not the case with other cultures, where they have some dietary restrictions. For example, in the case of Muslims, there is the concept of halal and, in the case of Jewish, the concept of kosher. In the case of halal, several middle eastern restaurants in Vancouver have the halal certified sign but, in the case of kosher, not that I could find. But, Sherman found about Maple Grill and asked the usual question… Who is up for it?

Sweet Obsession Cakes & Pastries

After our meal at The Irish Heather as part of its Long Table Series (as blogged here), we decided to look for a place for dessert. Unfortunately (?), Jessica, Mark, Sherman and Viv had other previous engagements so that left Mijune, Anita and me. We could have had dessert and The Irish Heather but, let’s face it, we had an excuse to visit somewhere! At first, we were thinking on different places in Downtown/West End but, after some back and forth thoughts, we decided to go to Thomas Haas in Kits. However, when we arrived, we found out it was closing so that left us again with that eternal question… In the spur of the moment, I remembered the first time I met Mijune, where we were in West Side and ended up going to Trafalgar’s Bistro. So, how about Sweet Obsession which happens to be right next to it? Everybody agreed so to Sweet Obsession it was!

Baru Latino

Like most social activities, blogging – in my case, food blogging – is an activity where you get to know other people who share your passion. In this particular case, I got to meet Mijune, who writes Follow Me Foodie for dinner. The original place we were planning to meet was Moby Dick Restaurant, a well known fish and chips restaurant in White Rock; however, after second thoughts, we ended up going to Baru Latino, a Latin American restaurant in Vancouver’s West Side. Hey, I am familiar with (some) Latin American food, right?
Update: Mijune’s thoughts of Baru Latino can be found here!

Sorry for this fuzzy, sub-par picture.
